Kiefer Landfill in Sloughhouse: hours, fees and what rides free

Open seven days, takes cash, no residency required. $61.35 a ton (effective 2026-01-01) weighed, a flat fee per pickup, and a long list of free drop-offs.

Cars and pickups pay a flat fee, not a weight

Kiefer charges a car, van or pickup a flat fee per vehicle. Trailers, box trucks and anything bigger go across the scale.

What costs nothing to drop here

This is the part most people miss. The fee sheet lists a long run of no-fee items, and a load made up only of no-fee items pays nothing at all:

• Clean inerts: asphalt, tile, brick, rock, stucco or concrete no larger than 36 inches, no rebar, no dirt, no trash.
• Clean metal: 8 feet or shorter, tanks cut in half, batteries and fluids removed from mechanical equipment.
• Large appliances: the first two a day are free (refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, home AC). From the third on, $35 each (effective 2026-01-01).
• Mattresses on a non-business load.
• Passenger and light-truck tires: one to four a day are free, five to eight are $10 each (effective 2026-01-01), and nine or more are weighed at $557.90 a ton (effective 2026-01-01). Commercial and semi tires are $30 each (effective 2026-01-01).
• TVs, monitors and other e-waste from residents.

The county's own example: four passenger tires plus two large appliances and no trash is no fee.

Sort the load before you leave the driveway

Green waste and clean wood have to be separated from trash and dropped in their own area. That is state organics law, not a Kiefer preference. Bagged green waste has to come out of the bags, and painted, stained or treated wood has to come out of a clean-wood load.

It matters for the bill. Green waste and clean wood run $115.65 a ton (effective 2026-01-01), and the sheet says a mixed load the customer will not sort can be charged as special handling at $347.80 a ton (effective 2026-01-01). Put the trash and the yard waste on different ends of the trailer.

Kiefer is the only Sacramento County facility that takes treated wood: fence posts, railroad ties, piers. It goes in as hard-to-handle at $144.90 a ton (effective 2026-01-01), the same class as concrete chunks over three feet or with heavy rebar, and structures longer than eight feet. Mixed inerts (under 36 inches, a little rebar and dirt, no trash) are $28.45 a ton (effective 2026-01-01). Stumps up to 3 feet wide by 8 feet long go with the green waste.

Paint, batteries, oil and antifreeze

They do not go in the trash pile. Kiefer has a separate Kiefer Landfill ABOP & Special Waste drop-off on site, open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., which is shorter than the landfill. It takes antifreeze, batteries, oil, paint and special waste; Sacramento County residents at no fee; businesses by appointment. The fee sheet gives the business appointment line as 916-876-9458. Kiefer or NARS

Sacramento County runs two public gates. Kiefer weighs at $61.35 a ton (effective 2026-01-01). The North Area Recovery Station in North Highlands weighs at $89.90 a ton (effective 2026-01-01) and charges a pickup $40 (effective 2026-01-01) instead of $35 (effective 2026-01-01). NARS stays open later, until 6 p.m., and it is the closer gate for north Sacramento. NARS does not take treated wood; Kiefer does. For Elk Grove, Galt, Rancho Cordova, Folsom and the Delta towns, Kiefer is the one to plan around. Every rate side by side is in every gate and every rate for 2026.

When it is cheaper to just go yourself

Here is the gate fee for three of our standard load sizes against what we charge to load and haul the same thing. The tonnage is an estimate for ordinary household junk, not a weighed job, and the gate column is Kiefer Landfill's posted rate of $61.35 a ton with its $45.00 minimum, effective 2026-01-01.

Go yourself if you have a pickup and it fits in one trip: a flat $35 (effective 2026-01-01), and your first two appliances, your mattresses and up to four tires are free. Kiefer takes cash and does not care what county you live in. For one pickup load, that beats anything we charge, and we would rather tell you so.

The middle option is our trailer. We drop it, you load it on your own schedule, and we haul it to the gate: $275 for a day with the first ton of disposal included, delivery free within 25 minutes of our Lodi yard. Details on dump trailer rental.

Hire it out when the load is the problem, not the gate:

• You do not have the truck. A rental truck, fuel and the afternoon sit on top of every figure above.
• It is heavy or awkward. A fridge off a back porch, a sleeper sofa down a staircase, a hot tub. That is where people get hurt.
• It is more than one trip. A whole house or a packed garage turns into several runs, each one weighed and billed on its own.
• You cannot make the gate. Weekend hours start at 8:30, the gate closes at 4:30, and it can close early when the daily vehicle limit is hit.
