Most searches for free hot tub removal end at one of four options. Here is what each one costs you.
- Give it away: free, if it still works. A tub that heats and holds water can go on a free listing. Whoever takes it does the draining, the disconnect and the haul, and needs a trailer and several people to lift it. A tub that leaks or will not heat is much harder to give away.
- City bulky pickup: usually a no. Curbside programs are built for couches and mattresses, not spas. Citrus Heights' neighborhood pickup, for one, lists hot tubs as not accepted.
- Haul it to the dump yourself: not free. You drain it, cut it apart and pay by weight at the scale: $60.93 a ton (effective 2026-01-01) at North County Landfill, $89.90 a ton (effective 2026-01-01) at the North Area Recovery Station in Sacramento. Kiefer Landfill takes clean metal at no fee (effective 2026-01-01), but only once it is cut out and separated.

Questions people actually ask
How much to remove a hot tub?
$350 to $750. The number depends almost entirely on access — a tub on a patio with a wide gate is at the bottom of that range, a tub on a second-story deck or behind a fence with no gate is at the top.
Do I need an electrician?
Usually not. We disconnect at the spa pack and shut the breaker. If your setup needs a permit-level disconnect we will tell you before we start rather than in the middle.
Do you have to cut it up?
Almost always, and that is the point — cutting it into sections is what lets us take it out through a normal gate instead of pulling your fence apart or renting a crane.
How long does it take?
Two to four hours. Most are done in an afternoon.
Is there free hot tub removal?
Only when the tub still works and someone wants it: list it free, and whoever takes it pays the cost in their own time and truck. A dead tub has a real cost, because it has to be drained, disconnected, cut into sections and paid for at the gate by weight. Ours starts at $350 and a typical tub is $450, quoted in writing before we start.
Where does a removed hot tub get disposed of?
It gets split up. Once the tub is cut into sections, the metal parts (pump, motor, heater and any metal framing) are separated for scrap, and the shell, cabinet and foam go to the landfill as weighed waste. Lodi-area loads tip at North County Landfill on Harney Lane at $60.93 a ton (effective 2026-01-01). South Sacramento County loads go to Kiefer Landfill, which takes clean metal at no fee (effective 2026-01-01). We keep the scale ticket for every load.
