Junk removal vs. dumpster rental: who does the lifting decides it
Full-service pickup, a trailer you load yourself, or a roll-off container: what each one includes, what ours cost, and the job each one fits.
The short answer
Hire junk removal when the pile already exists and you do not want to lift it. Rent a trailer or a dumpster when the debris is still being made, such as a remodel, a roof or a cleanout that runs over several days, and you have the hands to load it.
Price only makes sense after that question. A container looks cheaper until you count the day of loading that comes with it.
Three options, side by side
We sell the first two, so read this knowing that. The roll-off column has no prices because we do not publish other companies' rates; ask them directly, and ask the questions in the last row.
| Full-service junk removal | Our dump trailer | Roll-off dumpster | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who loads it | We do | You do | You do |
| How long it sits | It does not. We load and leave. | A day, or a week | Set by the roll-off company |
| How it is priced | By how much of the trailer you fill, $200 to $895 | $275 for a day, or $575 for a week | By container size and rental days |
| Disposal | Included, except heavy debris past the first ton | First ton included on the day rate; the week rate is billed at the scale ticket | Ask what weight is included and what each ton over costs |
| Loading height | Not your problem | Tailgate down, walk-in ramp | Over the side wall |
| Where it parks | Nowhere | Where your car fits | Needs room for the drop truck; street placement can need a city permit |
Same garage, two ways
Take a one-car garage, which our price book calls a half load: about 7 cubic yards and, at the density we estimate with, about 0.7 ton.
- Full service: $375. We show up, load it and leave.
- Our trailer for a day: $275, with that load inside the first ton the day rate includes. You do the loading.
The difference between those two numbers is what the loading costs you. If you have two people and a free morning, the trailer is the better deal. If you have a bad back or a flight on Sunday, it is not.
When a trailer or a dumpster is the right call
- The debris is still being made. Remodels, re-roofs and tear-outs produce waste every day, and a container sitting in the driveway catches it as it comes. Our construction debris removal page covers the full-service side of the same job.
- You have a crew. Contractors and families with a weekend free load faster than they can schedule a pickup.
- Sorting takes time. An estate where the family goes through every room before anything leaves suits a trailer for a week at $575.
- You want to control the pace. Fill it Saturday, finish Sunday, we pick it up Monday.
Dump trailer rental has the full rate card, including the $195 swap when one load is not enough.
When full-service junk removal is the right call
- Everything is already there. A garage, a shed, a rental unit after a move-out. There is nothing to wait for, so there is no reason to pay for a container to sit.
- The heavy pieces. Refrigerators, pianos, hot tubs and safes are where people get hurt. We price them as items: $90 for a fridge with refrigerant recovery, $400 for an upright piano.
- Stairs or a long carry. We charge $25 a flight and $45 for a long carry from the door to the trailer. With a container, those flights are yours.
- A deadline. One visit, done, with a fixed price in writing before we start.
Junk removal covers what we take and what we will not. For a whole house, start at estate cleanouts.
Heavy material changes the math
Concrete, dirt, roofing, tile and brick weigh out long before they fill anything. That is true of every container and every truck.
With full service, the first ton is in the load price and each ton past it is $95. With our trailer, the day rate includes the first ton and each ton past it is $125. With a roll-off, ask what weight is included before you order; that is where the invoice grows.
Clean concrete and clean dirt can be nearly free at the gate if they are not mixed with trash. The rules are in concrete, dirt and rock disposal.
If you have already decided on a container
Then the question is which kind. A trailer wins on loading height, driveway damage and fitting where a car fits. A roll-off wins on weeks-long demolition and very large volumes in one box.
The five differences are laid out in dump trailer vs. roll-off dumpster. When a roll-off is honestly the right tool for your job, we will say so.
