How junk removal pricing actually works — and the four tricks to watch for

Volume pricing decoded, plus the pricing patterns that turn a $200 quote into a $600 invoice.

Volume, not weight — and why

Almost all junk removal is priced by how much of the truck or trailer your stuff fills, not what it weighs. That is because household junk runs about 150 to 250 pounds per cubic yard, so a load cubes out long before it weighs out. Volume is the binding constraint, so volume is the price.

The exception is heavy material — concrete, dirt, roofing, tile, brick. Those weigh out first, and any company pricing them by volume is going to lose money or change the price. Honest ones price them by the ton up front.

What a "full truck" actually means

This is where comparison shopping breaks down, because a full truck is not a standard unit.

A national-brand full truck is roughly 12 cubic yards. Our trailer with side extensions is about 14. A 10-yard roll-off is 10. When one company quotes "$650 for a full truck" and another quotes "$895 for a full trailer," you are not comparing the same thing, and the cheaper one may be more expensive per yard.

Ask for cubic yards. Anyone who cannot tell you is guessing.

The four tricks

"Starting at." A price that exists only for a load nobody has. The real number arrives when a crew is in your driveway and it is socially difficult to say no. This is the oldest one and it still works.

The disposal fee added at the end. Disposal is the core cost of the business. A company that excludes it from the quote is not quoting the job.

Per-item pricing that stacks invisibly. Mattress, fridge, TV, tire — reasonable individually. Ask for the total with your items included, in writing, before booking.

The hourly cleanout. For a small job hourly is fine. For a whole-house cleanout, hourly transfers all the schedule risk to you, and the eight-hour estimate becomes fourteen hours on the second day.

What to ask on the phone

Five questions and you will know who you are dealing with:

1. What is my total, including my mattress and my fridge? 2. Is that a fixed price or does it change on site? 3. How many cubic yards is a full load for you? 4. Is disposal included? 5. What happens if it turns out to be more than we thought?

The answer to number five is the real test. "We stop and requote before continuing" is the right answer. Anything vaguer means the number moves.

Our answer to all five

Fixed, written, before we start. 14 cubic yards with the extensions. Disposal included. And if the job grows, we stop and requote before we continue — we never add it silently and hand you a larger invoice at the end. Our full price book, including every surcharge that exists, is published at /pricing/.
